We all know that most of the time travelling with kids is less than glamorous. And lots of us are not willing to risk it as we come back more tired than we left, mostly because sometimes kids don’t sleep so great in a strange environment.
Another sleep issue that many often come head to head with are the sleeping arrangements.
If you’ve been following us here on the blog and on social media, you might know that we have recently come back from a family get away. Read about it here and here. After a few trial and error goes we have gotten the whole sleep thing down to a T.
While travelling somewhere on the airplane is a different story, road tripping in your car opens you up a lot of options on how to make the hotel sleep better.
So here’s what we do…
We got a playpen, 4MOMS Breeze has been treating us AMAZING, and it folds in and out with ONE hand. Both our kids nap in it at home periodically.
Most of the time hotels have their own much used packNplays, I am a little grossed out by them, but if you are tight on space that option is always there.
Now that Ava is in her big girl bed, the real life SAVIOUR has been our DOCKATOT. We can put her either in a spare bed or on the fold out couch and she sleeps like a dream, not to mention she LOVES sleeping in the big bed.
Both our girls love their DockAtots so much. They both love to lounge in there and drink their milk, read books, and watch cartoons.
The DockAtot comes with a carry bag which makes it so easy packing it up in the car.
I also love that the cover is completely removable and washable.
The DockAtot comes in two sizes. The Delux is rated for a newborn to 8 months and the Grand (which I have) is 9 months till 36 months.

The girls also lounge in them at home a lot and Ava often naps in it. It again creates a sense of familiarity that I believe helps them settle so easily in a strange place.
If you aren’t able to bring a play pen or a DockAtot, I always bring a crib sheet from home, just to once again give them a piece of home and security when we are away.
Also, last but not least, try and stick to the same routine as you do at home. I.e. similar bed time, bath, book, whatever it is you do every day at home.
